1979 Yamaha 0W40 - Bob Hannah 250 National & SX Championship Bike
Bob Hannah say's this was the best Yamaha he ever rode and he won both the 250 National's and 250 SX Championships with it.
The 0W40 is super light at 198 lbs.
Everything is centrally located on the 0W40. This was one of the main objectives when designing this bike. When riding it, it feels a lot lighter than it is and it is already very light. It was without a doubt the best bike of 1979.
Keith McCarty had these extra volume fork caps made to be able to be able to alter the spring curve.
Machined billet aluminum.
No mistaking whose front fender this is.
This basic style sand cast magnesium front hub was used for nearly a decade but there are slight design changes as they progressed.
Very compact and very light.
Carbon fiber motor mounts held with titanium bolts.
The shock reservoir is partially tucked into the airbox.
Very strong aluminum stock is used for the brake pedal to give a very solid feel. The aluminum guard is to protect the pedal when going through deep ruts.
The brake and clutch perches are made from carbon fiber, magnesium and held together with a titanium pin.
Who didn't want one of these. The low angle is because the shock was positioned so low to lower the center of gravity.
Note how the rear brake torque arm bends to allow plenty of clearance for the brake lever. It also has heim joints at each end to prevent and binding should there be any flex. Pretty trick!

Keith McCarty was the wrench that kept this bike in tip top shape on a weekly basis.
A beautiful piece of equipment. Not a bad angle on the 0W40.
The aluminum swingarm is beautiful yet very strong.
Bob Hannah took care of his sponsors.
Very slim design with no obstructions anywhere.
Very compact and potent engine, all sandcast magnesium held into the frame with carbon fiber motor mounts. Imagine that, in 1979!
Handmade shock was made by Yamaha.
Note how everything is centralized for better balance and handling.
Bob Hannah says this bike was the best Yamaha he ever rode.
In 2016 Bob Hannah was reunited once again with his 1979 Championship 0W40 at the 60th anniversary celebration at Yamaha's headquarters in Cypress, California. He looks like he could still win today.
