1980 Mugen ME125-W1
Works bike technology for the privateer in 1980
Under the hood of what Hirotoshi Honda says was his most proud achievement.
The hand laid fiberglass tank is a thing of beauty and also very lightweight.
The ergonomics of the ME125-W1 are very well thought out, even compared to the works Honda's of the same year.
Rear shocks are works Showa but a little inferior to the Ohlins.
The motor was a rocketship and with the Mugen accessory 37mm Mikuni, had tons of over-rev.
The one piece radiator keeps the weight low and the plumbing is well tucked out of the way. Hiro Honda is a genius.
Each component on the Mugen is a carefully hand-crafted part, like this beautiful aluminum swingarm.
Top triple clamp is forged aluminum. This combined with knurled forks keeps the flex to a minimum.
Johnny O'Mara once said his Mugen was a better bike than his 1981 works Honda. That is saying something. Those are 39mm works Showa forks with the then, newly developed anti stiction triple chrome finish.
The Mugen ME125-W1 still has a futuristic design
